When you're admitted

At the start of the admission process, we will spend a lot of time talking with you, your family, and other relevant people to find out as much as possible about how things have been going. We may ask for permission to obtain reports or assessments from other places, if relevant. We will provide some initial feedback about what we think is going on and what we think will be helpful. We will then work with you and your family to decide on a treatment plan. This treatment plan may involve individual counselling, family counselling, medication treatment, lab tests and assessments by other health professionals.

Treatment plans

Our team will then work with you daily on this treatment plan. We will meet with you individually to discuss how you are feeling and to help you develop better coping skills and strategies. We will also involve you in group activities and programs that are designed to help you feel better about yourself and to improve your overall functioning. During the school year, you will also be involved in a school program (in which you may be able to get some credit for hours participated). In talking with you and observing you during these situations, we will assess and revise your treatment plan as necessary.

Discharge plans

As things improve over the admission, we will also work with you and your family on discharge plans. These plans may include details regarding follow-up, which school program or other activity you will attend, what can be done to improve your safety, what can be done differently at home, and so on. Before discharge we will usually arrange for you to go home on pass with your family, to gauge the success of adjustment out of hospital before we finally discharge you. At the time of discharge, we will provide you and your family with final feedback about the issue, improvements that have occurred so far, and what remains to be improved in the future.
