Renal denervation device

A new intervention provides a treatment option for patients with hypertension.

In Canada, nearly 25% of adults live with hypertension (high blood pressure). Although there have been advancements in blood pressure management interventions, hypertension continues to be a leading cause of damaging cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.

Drug-based interventions are not always viable options for those living with hypertension due to cost barriers, side effects, and difficult treatment plans, among other factors. Renal denervation is a minimally invasive device-based intervention designed to be an alternative to common medication routes.

While kidneys assist in the regulation of blood pressure, over activity of nerves leading to and from the kidney site can contribute to high blood pressure. Renal denervation targets overactive nerves with an electric current, resulting in a decrease of nerve activity and lower blood pressure. Once the 2 hour procedure is completed, the device is removed and the patient is left with an implant-free solution.

Through your support, you will allow more patients the opportunity to choose their hypertension treatment option.
