How have donations from the Gord Downie Fund been used?
The Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research supports four important initiatives:
- The Gord Downie Fellowship in Brain Oncology
- Construction of the Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre
- Clinical and research space for neurologists who care for patients with brain cancer
- Centre for Neuromodulation where clinical applications of focused ultrasound will be developed and advanced
- Research in personalized glioblastoma radiation treatment
- The adoption of an all-of-institution approach to cancer care for Indigenous patients at Sunnybrook
What is glioblastoma?
- A glioblastoma is the most common and most aggressive cancerous tumour that starts in the brain.
- These tumours are made up of different cell types.
- Glioblastomas are usually highly cancerous because the cells reproduce quickly and have a large network of blood vessels supporting them.
- Like many brain tumour types, the exact cause of glioblastoma is not known.
How is glioblastoma treated?
- At Sunnybrook, glioblastoma patients are treated at our Odette Cancer Centre.
- Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.
For the first time in history, treatment can be delivered deep inside the brain, where no scalpel can reach.
