Dr. Marc Jeschke elected president of Shock Society

Dr. Marc Jeschke, medical director of the Ross Tilley Burn Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, has been elected president of the Shock Society, a group of medical professionals and researchers from across North America who share the common goal of improving care of those with trauma, shock, and sepsis.

"I'm excited to serve as president of the Shock Society, and I look forward to continuing its mission of improving care for patients alongside my work at Sunnybrook," says Dr. Jeschke, who will hold the position for a one-year term.

Dr. Jeschke, who is also senior scientist, Biological Sciences, Tory Trauma Research Program, Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) and professor, division of plastic and reconstructive surgery, department of surgery, University of Toronto, is the first physician from a Canadian hospital to be elected to the position.

Since joining the Shock Society as a junior clinician scientist, Dr. Jeschke has been involved with the group’s planning, decisions, and innovations as part of the Executive Council and Chair of the Strategy Committee. He also served as Program Chair in 2016 for the annual meeting in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Jeschke leads the burn research and skin regeneration lab at Sunnybrook, where research teams focus on improving the morbidity and mortality rates of severely injured burn patients.

Recent and ongoing research in his lab includes the development of a handheld 3D skin printer and engineering skin substitutes using stem cells derived from a patient’s own surgically removed burn tissue. The lab is also regarded as a world leader in studying metabolism after burn, with researchers conducting translational and clinical trials is this area.
