$6 million grant awarded to Sunnybrook team for exploring ultrasound in making cancer therapies more effective

November 29, 2022

Congratulations to a team led by Dr. Gregory Czarnota, radiation oncologist and senior scientist at the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, that has been awarded $6 million in funding from the Terry Fox Research Foundation.

The team will use the funds from a Terry Fox New Frontiers Program Project Grant to explore techniques that use ultrasound technology that may make existing cancer therapies up to 60 times more effective. They’ll also examine the imaging power of ultrasound with the aim of better predicting how cancer patients will respond to treatments.

“As a team, we understand that innovation is the only way to make cancer therapies more precise and effective,” says Dr. Czarnota. “That is why we value this new grant as an opportunity to continue pushing boundaries to bring more hope to cancer patients.”

The research team also involves Sunnybrook project leads Dr. David Goertz, Dr. Greg Stanisz, Dr. Kullervo Hynynen and Dr. Ali Sadeghi-Naini, as well as other collaborators from the Odette Cancer Program and Sunnybrook Research Institute.
