Following an extensive national search, Sunnybrook's Board of Directors unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Keith Rose as the new Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Executive. Dr. Rose will begin in this role on April 14, 2008.
Dr. Rose comes to Sunnybrook from his most recent post as the Vice President and Chief Medical Executive at North York General, one of Ontario’s largest community teaching hospitals. Dr. Rose has been in healthcare for more than 30 years and he brings to Sunnybrook an impressive background of leadership accomplishments from his tenure at North York to his work at St. Michael’s Hospital where he played a number of roles including Medical Director of Perioperative and Critical Care, Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee and Chief of the Department of Anaesthesia.
Dr. Rose has an extensive academic resume and is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He received his medical degree at the University of Western Ontario and specialist training in anaesthesia at the University of Toronto. In addition, he has been awarded several certificates in conflict management and leadership from the Harvard School of Public Health. He has a distinguished research career and has been recognized for his work in patient outcomes, introduction of technology into healthcare practice, and optimizing the utilization of operating room resources.
Sunnybrook was fortunate to attract a large number of highly qualified candidates for this exciting and challenging role and we are grateful for everyone who showed interest in this position. The search committee was looking for someone who shared our passion for the hospital and its bright future. The hospital was looking for a successor to Dr. Bob Lester who could build on a wealth of personal and professional experience, act as mentor to emerging leaders, and contribute clear strategic direction for the hospital. Although many of our candidates possessed these attributes, Dr. Rose was the one we believed could marshal all of these skills into immediate action and achieve results that are commensurate with the rapid pace of change and innovation at Sunnybrook.
Throughout his career, Dr. Rose has been an advocate for patient safety and performance improvement. He has nurtured the development of many professionals and clinical programs and he has helped instill an academic mandate in hospitals while recognizing the vital importance of building strong ties with the many communities our organizations serve. He has achieved great success and left admirable legacies with his former employers and is expected to have a long career with Sunnybrook that will yield similar results.
