Sunnybrook and St. John's Rehab merger receives final approval
On June 28th, the Honourable Deb Matthews, Ontario's Minister of Health and Long Term Care, provided Sunnybrook and St. John's Rehab with the final approval needed to merge the two organizations as of July 1, 2012.
With the announcement, several administrative changes are taking place as of the date of the amalgamation to ensure a smooth transition into one organization. Following an extensive external search, St. John's Rehab Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre are pleased to announce that as of July 1, 2012, the former President and CEO of St. John's Rehab, Malcolm Moffat, will become Sunnybrook's new Executive Vice President. Mr. Moffat will be responsible for the St. John's Rehab Program at Sunnybrook in addition to having oversight for the Odette Cancer Centre, Holland Musculoskeletal, and Veterans and Community Programs.
Mr. Moffat is a seasoned health care executive with more than 27 years experience and previous to his role with St. John's Rehab, he held several positions at Sunnybrook including Facilities Planning, Director of Surgery, and Chief Operating Officer at what was then called the Toronto Bayview Regional Cancer Centre (now the Odette Cancer Centre).
St. John's Rehab and Sunnybrook are also pleased to announce Ru Taggar will become Sunnybrook's full time Chief Health Professions and Nursing Executive. Since taking the interim role in December 2011, Ms. Taggar has excelled in providing leadership for both nursing and Sunnybrook's health professions and she has represented the interests of clinical staff at the Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Directors. Ms. Taggar will also continue to serve the organization as the Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety.
These announcements represent a new beginning for both Sunnybrook and St. John's Rehab and together we are building a comprehensive system of care that will benefit patients from their acute illness or injury through to their rehabilitation and recovery.
St. John's Rehab is now an eighth program of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and brings its excellent reputation to a stable of seven other internationally recognized programs including: Brain Sciences, Holland Musculoskeletal, Odette Cancer Centre, Schulich Heart Centre, Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care, Veterans and Community, and Women and Babies.
