New program will improve patient care

February 28, 2013

More than 70 people gathered in Toronto today, including Ontario's Health Minister, to launch an innovative model for improving patient care in general surgery.

"Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs include a bundle of interventions, supported by strong evidence, that lead to improved recovery, decreased complications and decreased length of hospital stay in patients having colorectal surgery," said Dr. Robin McLeod of Mount Sinai Hospital, the project's lead.

Hospitals affiliated with the University of Toronto have piloted the project over the past few months, noted Dr. McLeod. With investment from the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO), the project will be implemented across multiple hospitals.

Sunnybrook is one of 24 member hospitals of CAHO.
