More women will get the best for their breasts

March 31, 2010

Cynthia Nagamatsu was only 42 when she found a lump on her breast.

"Being at Sunnybrook, to me, was like being in the arms of an angel," Cynthia remembers. "There were so many times I sat in the waiting room thinking ‘oh my gosh, I'm so lucky to be here in this hospital.'"

It was in a Sunnybrook waiting room that Cynthia saw a flyer for Live to Tell, an event featuring Sheryl Crow to raise funds for Sunnybrook's Breast Cancer Research Centre.

"I just looked at the flyer and thought, ‘I need to go online and sign up.' Because every woman with breast cancer should get to be a Sunnybrook patient. And if the new Breast Cancer Research Centre gives more women access to Sunnybrook, that's amazing."

Cynthia talked to her doctor, Rebecca Dent, about how to get involved with fundraising.

She ended up raising more than $13,000 to build the Breast Cancer Research Centre.

"It was during the economic downturn, and I thought it would be a struggle to raise a thousand!" says Cynthia. "I was shocked by my donors and their response. It made me realize how I've impacted people."
