Veterans' association gives back

November 8, 2010

"Sunnybrook has always impressed us," says Riccardo Paci, a member of the Markham District Veteran's Association (MDVA). "It's the way veterans are treated. It's a very happy place."

"But back in the '60s, it was not the modern building it is today," adds Paul Kearns, president of the association.

Many unique initiatives for veterans are in place thanks to the generosity of private donors like the MDVA.

Through the yearly poppy campaign, the MDVA uses money raised to invest in Sunnybrook's Veteran's Comfort Fund and the Grant a Wish Fund.

These funds are used to go above and beyond health care - to engage veterans in hobbies or provide the funds for special activities like trips to see loved ones.

The association also supports Sunnybrook because of its potential impact on future care.

"Some of today's young soldiers will need Sunnybrook's care tomorrow," says Riccardo. "It's important they have a place where they will feel welcome."
