Sunnybrook nurse saluted as ‘nursing hero’ in national contest
For the third consecutive year, a Sunnybrook nurse has placed in the top three in the annual Nursing Hero Awards organized by Hospital News, one of Canada’s leading healthcare newspapers.
Eleanor Miller, registered nurse and patient care manager in the Odette Cancer Program placed second in this year’s nationwide award, and is the only Ontario nurse in the top three.
In her nomination, Miller is described as “a fierce leader, the calm in the storm, but more importantly she is one of those unsung heroes whose ability to blaze the trail within the health-care system will leave a legacy of commitment, courage and strong leadership.”
Miller has been working in oncology at Sunnybrook for 28 years and currently manages the inpatient Medical and Radiation Oncology unit. She was recognized for her tireless commitment to improving the patient experience, support for her staff, and guidance to future nursing professionals.
“Her philosophy is that leadership is about building relationships, connecting with individuals and serving with your head and heart,” says the nominator, adding that Miller often takes time to meet with patients on the unit to ensure their care needs are met; and is constantly looking for ways to support or recognize her team.
“I am truly humbled and honored to be one of the recipients of this award,” says Miller. “Sunnybrook provides the foundation and environment that allows me to excel and continue to build towards greatness. I am very passionate about working in oncology, and believe it’s a privilege to be able to enjoy what I do while serving others.“
The Nursing Hero Awards, announced in honour of National Nursing Week (May 9 to 15), salute Canadian nursing heroes and highlight their exceptional work. Nominations were from peers, managers, patients and patients’ family members.
