Sunnybrook nurse saluted for her exceptional work

May 5, 2014

Congratulations to Linda Jurincic, oncology nurse at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre who is being recognized as a nursing hero, and the first place winner in the annual Nursing Hero Awards organized by Hospital News, one of Canada’s leading healthcare newspapers.

“Linda is an outstanding nurse who has touched the lives of countless patients and families in the most meaningful of ways,” says Tracey DasGupta, director of Interprofessional Practice at Sunnybrook. “In the highly technical environment of the Brachytherapy Suite in the Odette Cancer Centre, where patients receive radiation treatment for their cancer, Linda goes out of her way to ensure that patients receive warm, compassionate care that is based on their own unique needs."

Nominators, Laura D’Alimonte, radiation therapist, Dr. Lisa Barbera, radiation oncologist and a patient, all agreed that Linda has "changed their lives". Read their nomination letters at HospitalNews.com. Linda was chosen from 120 nominations from across Canada.

Says Linda Jurincic, RN CON(C), “I am deeply honoured… and humbled by this award. To both love what you do, and be recognized for this work by peers and patients, is very fulfilling. I’d like to also offer my congratulations to all nominees.”

The Nursing Hero Awards, announced annually in honour of National Nursing Week (May 12 to 18, 2014) salute Canadian nursing heroes and highlight their exceptional work. Nominators can be patients and families, colleagues and managers who share their experiences about:

  • being inspired, encouraged or empowered by a nurse
  • being touched by the care and compassion of an outstanding nurse
  • knowing of a nurse who has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Three winners are selected. In addition to having their story published in Hospital News, they each receive a cash prize.
