New Complex Malignant Hematology Unit now open

Sunnybrook’s dedicated Complex Malignant Hematology in-patient unit and outpatient treatment unit are now open.

Complex malignant hematology includes a variety of disorders and cancers of the blood, like acute leukemia. These conditions start in the bone marrow or in the cells of the immune system and require specialized treatments.

Thanks to more than $7.8 million in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health, extensive renovations took place on an existing unit in order to create this new highly specialized unit. The 15-bed renovated space is now fully open.

In addition, government support allowed Sunnybrook to create a new outpatient unit for day treatments for patients facing blood cancer. In this clinic, patient will receive chemotherapy and other transfusions. Two pharmacies were also renovated as part of this project.

“Sunnybrook is known for its specialized care in many areas and we are so pleased that we can now open our doors even wider to welcome patients with acute hematological malignancies so that they can receive state-of-the-art care in a more timely manner and closer to home,” said Sunnybrook President and CEO Dr. Andy Smith.

In recent years, complex malignant hematology patients have faced long wait times and have often had to seek care outside of the GTA.
