Mourning the loss of John Tory Sr.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre would like to extend its sincere condolences to the Tory family on the passing of John Tory Sr. Mr. Tory and his family, they have been long-time supporters of the hospital and its programs and services.

Over the years the Tory family made significant contributions to Sunnybrook including a substantial donation to the Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care program at Sunnybrook, which named the Tory Regional Trauma Centre, in honour of the family's generosity. In 2008, Ted Rogers, Mr. Tory's life-long friend and business associate made a landmark $7.5 million dollar donation to Sunnybrook, which created the John and Liz Tory Eye Centre, to honour their friendship.

"On behalf of our 10,000 staff and volunteers and thousands of patients who have benefited from the generosity of the Tory family, we would like to offer our condolences and support to Mr. Tory's friends and loved ones in this difficult time," said Dr. Barry McLellan, President and CEO, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. "Mr. Tory was an incredible leader and example of someone who worked for the betterment of his community. The support he and has family have provided to Sunnybrook over the years has been an example for others to follow. They have helped saved lives and they have helped build a world-leading health care facility."

John and Liz Tory have been involved with Sunnybrook for decades. They are members of the Sunnybrook Foundation's, Governing Council, and are Honourary Co-Chairs of the Campaign for Sunnybrook, which has set a $470 million fundraising goal.

Mr. Tory's wife, Liz has served as a Director of the Hospital Board and has served for many years on numerous Board committees. Their daughter Jennifer Tory, Regional President, RBC Royal Bank, Toronto Region, has also been involved at Sunnybrook for many years, serving as a Director and Chair of the Board of Sunnybrook Foundation. She is currently the Chair of the Campaign for Sunnybrook, leading a $470 million fundraising effort.
