Dilatation and curettage (D&C)

What happens during the operation?

  • While you are asleep under anaesthesia, your doctor will open (dilate) your cervix.
  • Once your cervix is open, your doctor will use a thin spoon-shaped instrument to scrape (curette) the inside of your uterus.
  • For hysteroscopy, your doctor will guide the hysteroscope (camera) through your cervix into your uterus. The uterus is then inflated with fluid or gas to make it easier to see inside.
  • Any tissue that is removed from your uterus will be sent to the laboratory for evaluation. Results may take several weeks.
