Second Trimester Induction Of Labour
What can I expect?
- You will be offered a private room at no cost which includes a private washroom and a portable bed for your partner.
- The length of time between the starting of the medications and delivery varies a great deal. It is usually 15-24 hours.
- If after 6 doses of misoprostol you are not in active labour, your doctor may order an intravenous medication to induce labour.
- Vaginally inserted misoprostol is usually well tolerated, but some women may develop diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or fever. Medicine is available to manage these side effects should they occur.
- Before your delivery, you usually feel a great deal of pelvic pressure. It may feel as if you need to have a bowel movement. After you have this sensation, it is usually a short period of time before you deliver.
- As uterine contractions progress, the pain can be intense and painful. Some women have described the pain as strong menstrual cramps.
- Pain medication is routinely prescribed for the pain associated with this procedure and you are encouraged to use it. The medication is typically given through intravenous.
