A Step Closer: Critical Care Centre Sign Unveiled at Sunnybrook
When people across Ontario face their most critical moments, Sunnybrook is there to provide life-saving care. As we look to the future, that's why Sunnybrook has proposed a new Critical Care Centre that will transform the way we deliver critical care for people across Ontario.
Today, we were pleased to welcome Ontario Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones to our Bayview Campus to unveil signage for the new project alongside Sunnybrook leaders and first responder partners from Toronto Police, Toronto Fire, and Toronto Paramedic Services.
“We are grateful for the continued partnership and support from the Government of Ontario,” says Dr. Andy Smith, President & CEO of Sunnybrook. “Today’s event highlights the importance of that partnership, and Sunnybrook’s role as a leader in providing care to people across the province when it matters most. Today’s visit was a welcome opportunity to thank Minister Jones for her - and the Government of Ontario’s - support, and to continue the important work to make the new Critical Care Centre a reality.”

Ontario’s critical care needs are increasing as our population grows and ages. Sunnybrook’s proposed Critical Care Centre is more than just a new building; it will be a place that transforms the way we deliver life-saving care. As Canada’s largest trauma centre, it is key that our infrastructure meets the needs of patients. Nearly 50 per cent of Sunnybrook’s infrastructure was designed and built in the 1940s for soldiers returning from WWII and right now, our critical care teams are spread across eight different Intensive Care Units separated by large distances. The proposed Critical Care Centre will bring those beds together into one single centre, and increase capacity as the demand for critical care continues to grow.
Today marks the next step in the journey to make our Critical Care Centre a reality. We’re grateful to the support of our provincial partners as we continue to invent the future of health care.
