Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is pleased to announce the re-appointment of Dr. Csilla Kalocsai as the Academic Clinicians’ Management Services (ACMS) Professor in Education Research for a second five-year term.

Dr. Csilla Kalocsai

Since joining the Sunnybrook Research Institute and the Sunnybrook Education team in 2020, Dr. Kalocsai’s research activities have focused on advancing equity and social justice in health professions education and clinical care.

“I have long been interested in exploring issues of power and equity in the context of social and organizational change,” says Dr. Kalocsai, who is also an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at University of Toronto. “My work focuses on interconnected types of change efforts among those that aim to advance social justice and those that inadvertently contribute to inequities.”

In a unique role within the Sunnybrook Research Institute, Dr. Kalocsai’s research draws from the social sciences, humanities and critical theories to enhance understanding of power structures within health professions education and clinical practice. She has explored patient involvement in mental health professions education and research; examined anti-racism education in academic hospitals, including the Sunnybrook Program to Access Research Knowledge (SPARK) for Black and Indigenous medical learners; studied the health care experience of Deaf people and addressed the multi-level barriers to care and education for service users with substance use challenges amid the overdose crisis. Notably, Dr. Kalocsai’s collaborations with patients and service users, change agents and marginalized communities reflect her commitment to ethical, accessible, equitable, inclusive and emancipatory knowledge mobilization.

Dr. Kalocsai works closely with Sunnybrook Education and is co-director of Sunnybrook’s Hub for Applied Research in Education (SHARE) to enhance competency in health professions education research and scholarship across the hospital.

In her second term, Dr. Kalocsai will build upon her research to guide the design, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of change efforts to advance equity and social justice across health professions education and health care in Canada.

The ACMS Professorship in Education Research was established in 2019 to attract and support an education research scientist at Sunnybrook. Academic Clinicians’ Management Services (ACMS), formerly called Sunnybrook Hospital University of Toronto Clinic, is a not-for-profit corporation which has been serving the administrative needs of medical and dental practitioners since 1973.
