Sunnybrook mourns the loss of one of Canada's greatest business leaders and philanthropists

December 2, 2008

Sunnybrook mourns the loss of one of Canada’s greatest business leaders and philanthropists.  In September, Mr. Ted Rogers and his wife, Loretta, made a significant gift to Sunnybrook that created the John & Liz Tory Eye Centre.  This gift also created the Dixon Family Chair in Ophthalmology.  It was the largest single gift to ophthalmology ever in Toronto.

“Through their generosity, the Rogers family has given hope to all people whose ability to see is in peril,” said Barry McLellan, CEO of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.  “His legacy here at Sunnybrook and across the country is remarkable and enduring.”

“The Sunnybrook family is terribly saddened by the loss of Mr. Rogers,” said Kevin Goldthorp, CEO of Sunnybrook Foundation.  “We remain honoured and thankful for his trust in our ability to bring his philanthropic vision to life through the people of Sunnybrook.  Our deepest sympathies go to the Rogers family at this most difficult time.”
