Sunnybrook's Burn Centre wins Best of the Best award

July 23, 2015

Sunnybrook’s Ross Tilley Burn Centre has been named the top-performing burn intensive care unit (ICU) in the world, known as the “Best of the Best” award, in a new survey by Critical Care Nutrition.

“This is incredible news,” says Dr. Marc Jeschke, Director, Ross Tilley Burn Centre at Sunnybrook. “The entire Burn Centre team contributed to achieving this honour, particularly our clinical dietitian Rosemary Hayhoe. She worked very hard to put Sunnybrook forward for the award.”

A total of 252 ICUs from around the world were evaluated for the award. Sunnybrook’s Burn Centre placed second among the top 10 performing ICUs, and first overall of all participating burn ICUs.

ICUs were evaluated in several areas related to nutrition, including adequate energy supply, glycemic control and early initiation of enteral nutrition, also known as tube feeding.

The Burn Centre team’s early initiation of feeds and use of the volume-based feeding protocol to meet energy goals were just two areas that set Sunnybrook apart from other hospitals in the survey.

A representative from Critical Care Nutrition will travel to Sunnybrook to formally present the award to the Burn Centre team in September.
