Educators praised at annual awards

May 15, 2017

Sunnybrook’s champions of education were honoured May 10, 2017 at the 7th Annual Celebrating Excellence in Education Awards evening.

The event recognized 147 education leaders for their passion for teaching at Sunnybrook, in the community and beyond. The staff members and physicians received awards for their involvement in education by Sunnybrook or our partner academic institutions. Also honoured were those who received academic appointments and promotions at the University of Toronto.

The Sunnybrook Education Advisory Council (SEAC) presented seven awards, whose winners were determined through a nominations process and panel review.

Those winners were:

Patient & Family Education Award: The Learning Centre and PEARL volunteers

Education Research: Dr. Dominique Piquette

Educating Sunnybrook Award: Linda Ramjohn

Teaching Award: Dr. Jeremy Gilbert

Educating Beyond Sunnybrook Award: Dr. Marc Jeschke

Lawrence Jackson, clinical pharmacy coordinator in the Veterans Centre, received the Allan Knight Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award, which honours an education champion who has made a significant contribution to education at Sunnybrook.

This year, a new student-nominated award was given to Dr. Mark Pasetka, clinical pharmacist in the Odette Cancer Centre. The Student Experience Award recognizes someone who creates an outstanding learning environment and role models professional values and respect in their own interactions.

“At Sunnybrook, we are inventing the future of healthcare education,” said Dr. Ari Zaretsky, VP, Education. “And it is thanks to all of the education champions who have passionately answered the call to teach. Thank you to all of the teachers, faculty, preceptors and clinical educators who are rising to the challenge of empowering the next generation of health-care professionals, engaging patients and families and being education leaders far beyond Sunnybrook’s borders.”
