October 2009 Newsletter
We continue to grow. Thirty-two new members have been recruited to the department over the past 4 years and we are working to bring on another 8-10 outstanding recruits this next year. All of you are aware by now of the major push to improve patient flow through the emergency department. The time to admission decision for GIM is down to 3 hours, which is outstanding. Ensuring consults are done in a timely fashion is not restricted to GIM or to the ED. I've asked each of the divisions to look at their consult processes and we will begin to look at ways to facilitate prompt outpatient referrals to facilitate discharge.

Our first priorities over the next few months are to strongly represent our interests at the Hospital and University levels and to strengthen cohesion within our department. We will be working intently over the next few weeks with Chris Morgan and the economics committee to seek alternatives to our current financial management structure, with Denise Campbell and David Watson in the Departmental office to improve our business processes, and with the departmental executive to enhance the role of the division heads.>

We are about to welcome Dr. Kevin Imrie as the new PIC starting September 1, 2009. Kevin as a medical oncologist at Sunnybrook and is a leader in medical education. Kevin has served, and will continue to serve, as Vice Chair of Medicine for Education. We have started on a journey toward our strategic goal -"Investing in our future". Together we have accomplished a gooddeal and we now have 20 new faculty members to show for it! This is a very positive change as we have reinvigorated our academic and clinical programs.
