Dr. Giuseppe Papia
Dr. Giuseppe Papia

Vice President, Medical-Dental Midwifery Staff Association

Dr. Giuseppe Papia is a member of the Division of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery and the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre since 2009.

Dr. Papia is a graduate of the University of Ottawa Medical School who subsequently pursued specialty training in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto, where he also received a Master of Science degree in the Surgeon Scientist Program. He then pursued further fellowship training in Endovascular Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic prior to joining Sunnybrook.

Dr. Papia is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Surgery, and he served as the Physician Lead for the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Sunnybrook. He has subsequently completed the Patient Safety Officer Executive Development Program at the Institute for Health Care Improvement (IHI) in Cambridge Massachusetts as well as the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Program at U of T. Dr. Papia’s area of academic interest is in patient safety and quality improvement in peri-operative care.

Dr. Papia served as the Physician Lead for the OHA in the implementation of the Surgical Safety Checklist in Ontario, and currently serves as the Executive Faculty Lead-Checklist Implementation for the Canadian Patient Safety Institute Safer Healthcare Now! and he served as the Chair of the Education Committee for Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery.

He is currently involved in several patient safety initiatives at Sunnybrook as well as serves on the executive of the MDMSA. He is spearheading an initiative at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre to build awareness and reduce limb loss in patients with diabetes called Project Saving Legs (@savinglegs). He currently holds the J. Ross and Patricia Quigley Chair in Limb Preservation at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Papia joined the Board of Directors of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in June 2019 following his appointment as the Vice President, Medical-Dental Midwifery Staff Association.
