ALS Clinic

Clinic Scope

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive, usually fatal, neuromuscular disorder caused by the gradual degeneration of the motor nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement. It results in progressive weakness and patients typically survive 3-5 years from symptom onset. Patient outcomes are significantly improved by assessment and follow-up in a multi-disciplinary ALS clinic.

Sunnybrook’s ALS Clinic is among the largest clinics in the world and is the largest clinic in Canada. It is the only clinic in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding regions. We are affiliated with the University of Toronto Neurosciences Program. The clinic includes a multi-disciplinary team and a large clinical research program.

The interdisciplinary clinical team consists of Neurologists, Respirologist, Physiatrist, Palliative Care, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Registered Dietitian, Respiratory Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology. The Research Program includes multiple clinical trials testing the most promising ALS therapeutics and all patients are screened for eligibility.
