About us and our care

About the clinic

Our Accessible Care Pregnancy Clinic opened in March 2017 and is the first of its kind in North America. We strive to improve obstetrical care for pregnant people living with physical disabilities. The health care team at the clinic is currently in the process of developing new clinical guidelines through the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) to better serve this population.

Our goal is to improve obstetrical care for people living with physical disabilities.

About the care we provide

Our care options are individualized to each patient/client and their family, with the goal of providing seamless and holistic care throughout planning, pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period.

Sunnybrook has a team of health care staff who understand every pregnant person is unique and we will work together to create a pregnancy care and birth plan that is tailored to your specific needs. Our goal is to provide supportive care and a positive experience throughout pregnancy and birth. We aim to centralize care as much as possible so that if you require consultation with another specialist, it is often possible to see them in the same day and location.

Our values in care »

Respect as an individual

Your values and opinions are vital in directing your health care needs at the Accessible Care Pregnancy Clinic. We recognize that you are an expert when it comes to your body. You will be an active member of the health care team, and we will work with you to provide care to meet your needs. We will support and guide you, so you can make your own informed decisions for yourself and your family.

Excellence in communication

We understand that there are many changes to your body that come with pregnancy. You may or may not have preexisting medical conditions that will need to be monitored carefully throughout your pregnancy. We work in an interdisciplinary team, which means we all have different areas of focus and work closely together. Various specialists are consulted as needed.

It is important for your health care providers to know what is happening to your health and for you to feel supported throughout your care at the Accessible Care Pregnancy Clinic.

Consolidation of care

Multiple visits coupled with multiple tests and multiple specialists can be challenging. We want to limit the number of times you need to come for your appointments. We will try to consolidate your appointments to the same day. This may mean multiple appointments on the same day, and longer visits at Sunnybrook, rather than multiple visits to Sunnybrook.

Evidence-based practice

We believe every individual should receive the best care that is available. To that end, we provide evidence-based care. We are also involved in research to provide better evidence-based information for pregnant persons.
