Breastfeeding Centre of Excellence Education Fellowship
Sunnybrook offers an Education Fellowship to support health care providers in developing the knowledge, skill and judgment to assess and care for breastfeeding families.
Eligible applicants may be studying in the area of medicine, nursing and midwifery. Students must be affiliated with a school which has a partnership with Sunnybrook.
Objectives for the Fellowship
Participants will:
- Have the opportunity to have a comprehensive breastfeeding experience encompassing the preterm infant and full term infant during hospital stay and including post discharge or have the flexibility to focus on specific areas of interest related to breastfeeding
- Identify effective positioning and latching for the breastfeeding dyad
- Recognize breastfeeding challenges: difficulty latching, sore nipples, perceived low milk supply, low milk supply, blocked ducts, mastitis
- Observe different members of the interprofessional team including: lactation consultants, NICU breastfeeding resource nurse, nurse practitioners, nurses, neonatologists, physiotherapists, dietitians
- Demonstrate skills to develop care plans from basic to complex breastfeeding support
Fellowship length: 2 weeks
Upon completion of the education fellowship participants will be expected to complete an evaluation about their experience.
Participants will submit a copy of their goals for the fellowship and a letter of support from their school, faculty advisor or supervisor to:

On October 14, 2015, the inaugural education fellowship was announced, with recipient Misol Kim, a midwifery student, to spend two weeks assisting women in Sunnybrook’s DAN Women & Babies Program. This includes supporting mothers to breastfeed when their infants are sick or premature.
