This interactive class is directed to those who have seen their surgeon and are awaiting their heart surgery.
Cardiac Surgery Preoperative Class
These sessions are interactive and provide an opportunity to meet with some of the health care team members involved in your surgical care, as well as a volunteer who had heart surgery at Sunnybrook. This class is directed to those who have seen their surgeon and are awaiting their heart surgery.
Upon completion of the session, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the physical process before and after heart surgery
- Have a better understanding of how to manage their care after heart surgery
- Identify what to do and who to contact if they have new or worsening symptoms before their surgery
- Learn deep breathing and coughing techniques
- Understand the importance of follow up appointments including with their surgeons, cardiologist, family doctor and cardiac rehabilitation team after heart surgery
- Discuss the physical and emotional healing process after heart surgery

Cardiac Surgery Discharge Class
A live educational discharge class for patients and their loved one(s) after heart surgery. This class is directed to those who are or will be recovering after heart surgery. Speakers will include physiotherapists and registered dieticians
Upon completion of the session, participants should be able to:
- Understand the normal healing process after heart surgery and what to expect

- Understand interventions that can help them heal after heart surgery, including incision care, sternal precautions, dietary restrictions and glucose management

A fun and low-impact exercise program for patients recovering from open-heart surgery.
Chair Zumba
If you are a patient recovering from open heart surgery and looking for a low impact exercise program that is specific to your surgical limitations, please join our free weekly chair Zumba classes. A registered Zumba instructor and a surgical coordinator will be hosting weekly sessions, and provide an amazing opportunity to build a social network and improve your overall wellbeing.
Please attend these sessions once discharged from hospital until cardiac rehab. (Loved one(s) feel free to join and have fun!)

The Cardiac Support Group is a unique and one of a kind platform available to all Schulich heart patients and their loved one(s). Take advantage of this opportunity to meet and interact with other cardiac patients in an informal setting. A different topic will be covered each month.
