Communication

Woman getting hearing aid fitted

At Sunnybrook, we want to communicate with you in a way that considers your needs. We are dedicated to providing excellent customer service to people with disabilities and those who would prefer to receive medical information in a language other than English.

The following services are available at Sunnybrook to assist communication:

TTY locations (telephone teletypes)

TTY is a telecommunications device for the deaf and hearing impaired.

Bayview Campus

TTY telephones are located at the M1 entrance and in the Emergency Department waiting room.

Holland Centre

A TTY telephone is located just inside the out-patient department waiting room of the west wing.

The Holland Centre TTY phone number is 416-967-8707.

Pocketalkers

A Pocketalker is a portable amplifier that can be used for one-on-one communication with someone who has a hearing impairment.

Some inpatient units and the Emergency Department have Pocketalkers available for use. If one is not available, they can be obtained from the Audiology Department at M1 102, or by dialling 416-480-4143.

Interpreter services

If you or a family member feel most comfortable speaking in a language other than English (including American Sign Language), you may need a professional interpreter. Interpreters can help your communication with your healthcare provider by ensuring that each party can express themselves comfortably and accurately in their preferred language.

If you require an interpreter, please let the staff know when scheduling your appointment so that one can be booked for you. You can also let staff know when you arrive.

Advanced notice is appreciated by not required (For example, if you are going to the Emergency Department, notify staff when you arrive).
