Community Psychiatric Services for the Elderly (CPSE)
Introduction & Eligibility
Community Psychiatric Services for the Elderly (CPSE) promotes the mental health of seniors and seeks to maximize their level of functioning in the community. It is a resource for family physicians, other health care professionals and service providers. The team includes psychiatrists, social workers, nurses and occupational therapists.
Eligibility
- 65 years or older
- Mental health concerns
- Live within the service area - from York Mills to St. Clair and from Avenue Road to the Don Valley
- Benefit from in-home assessment
- Usually referred through family doctor
Available services
Assessment
- By psychiatrist and case manager
- Usually in place of residence
- Review of psychosocial, physical, psychiatric, cognitive and functional status at home and in the community
- Written report including treatment recommendations to family doctor
Counselling
- For seniors and their families
- Family support group for caregivers of persons with dementia
- Outpatient geriatric support group
Direct psychiatric services
- Ongoing management for seniors with psychiatric disorders/symptoms
Referral and co-ordination
- Referral to community agencies and support services
- Co-ordination of services and case management (if not otherwise available)
Consultation and liaison
- To care facilities and residential settings
- To community agencies
Educational programs and presentations
- At request of agencies, care facilities, interested groups
- Community development activities
- Psychogeriatric resource consulting to healthcare professionals
