Education & Training

We provide training for all medical students and dermatology residents at the University of Toronto, and are consistently rated at the top for best clinical experience. Our residents follow a world-class training program, helping them become dermatology specialists.

The University of Toronto has the largest dermatology program of its kind in North America and is an important leadership site in the University environment. The division director (DDD), program director, esthetic dermatology director, and coordinator of undergraduate education are all situated at the Sunnybrook Bayview campus.

Our specific priorities include:

Complex patient care

These are diseases with important co-morbidities and those that require major systemic therapies. We are the leaders in care of pemphigus, psoriasis, collagen-vascular disease, and many genodermatoses that present or persist into adulthood.

Cancer

In collaboration with the Odette Centre, we have a major activity in coordinating care for patients with high-risk pigmented lesions (Pigmented Lesion Clinic), melanomas, other skin cancers like severe basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas, and Merkel cell tumours (General Skin Cancer clinic), and CTCL (individual and combined CTCL clinics)

Community

Our teaching and care includes community dermatologists and distributed teaching. We have worked with patients to create active groups for pemphigus and pemphigoid (Canadian Pemphigus & Pemphigoid Foundation, with our team in active Medical Advisory capacities), and the Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation. We are very committed to understanding diversity in our clinics and our staff, offering retreats for our residents on diversity issues.

Chronic disease

For dermatology residents we have senior clinics for PGY5 trainees that allow for 6 months of weekly clinics.
