Clinics & Clinical Care

The Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) has 13 full-time faculty members who deal with preventing, diagnosing and treating adults with complex multi-system illness in the inpatient and ambulatory setting. We are responsible for the vast majority of patients admitted to the Department of Medicine at Sunnybrook, with approximately 5000 admissions to GIM annually. Our members also provide about 1300 consultations each year for medical issues in all areas of the hospital.

We are also responsible for two unique and highly innovative programs. Specifically, we lead and operate the Hospitalist Training Program as well as the Sunnybrook Patient Safety Unit. Both undertakings are firsts in Canada and both have attracted considerable external attention.

Other successful initiatives have included a daily rapid referral clinic, which helps patient flow and wait times through the emergency department, and our discharge clinic to see patients after they leave the CTU, in order to reduce readmission rates and ease transition back to the community.
