Why does Sunnybrook have a new digital indoor map?

One of the greatest areas of dissatisfaction for hospital patients and visitors is wayfinding – the process of finding one's way around a hospital.

Research has shown that on average, 30% – 50% of arriving patients and visitors end up lost inside hospitals, which can lead to a poor patient experience. Poor wayfinding can also lead to missed or late appointments, which can cost a hospital hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.

Sunnybrook’s digital wayfinding tool aims to curb these issues and enhance the patient experience by providing patients and visitors with accurate, turn-by-turn indoor directions that are available at their fingertips.

Can I use the map to locate washrooms and food services around the hospital?

Yes. Public women’s, men’s, all-gender and accessible washrooms are indicated on Sunnybrook’s digital map. These can be located by searching for the preferred washroom using the map’s search bar.

Washrooms can also be located by selecting the preferred washroom category under the map’s 'POI Category' menu.

Food and other services can also be found on the map by searching for the name of the service you are looking for.

Does the map provide accessible directions?

Yes. When generating directions, check off the 'avoid stairs and obstacles' option to receive accessible directions.

Why isn’t the Veterans Centre on the indoor map?

The Veterans Centre is home to the veteran residents who live there. To respect their privacy, indoor mapping for these buildings has been omitted.

Are you going to expand this map to other Sunnybrook campuses?

We are currently piloting use of the indoor digital map at the Bayview Campus. We will update this webpage with future indoor mapping expansions as they arise.

Can the map pinpoint my location in the hospital when I’m using it?

No. The map can not identify or track your location, as it does not have GPS functionality.
