Funding support
Services at the Sunnybrook Centre for Independent Living (SCIL) are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) offered by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care that provides partial coverage for prosthetic and orthotic devices.
Clients are responsible for the remaining cost of their services and device(s). Our funding advisor can help you apply for potential additional funding.
How services are funded:
Prosthetics
Prosthetics costs are partially covered by the Assistive Devices Program (ADP). ADP funding works by an application and approval process. Your prosthetist and our funding advisor can help patients submit their applications.
Orthotics
Orthotics costs are partially covered by the Assistive Devices Program (ADP). ADP funding works by an application and approval process. Your orthotist can help patients submit their applications.
Pedorthics
Pedorthic services (custom foot orthotics, retail orthopaedic shoes and their modification, and custom made footwear), are not funded by OHIP or ADP.
You can refer to information below about the Ontario Disabilities Services Program (ODSP) and Private Insurance to learn about funding options to help cover the cost of your foot orthotics or shoes.

A closer look at funding options
- Assistive devices program (ADP)
Provides partial funding for prosthetic devices and custom orthotic devices (braces). That funding varies from patient to patient. ADP typically does not cover the entire cost of the device. Our patients are responsible for any cost not covered by ADP. You may qualify for additional funding assistance. We can help.
There are other sources of funding to help you with this payment. They include:
- Workplace safety insurance board (WSIB)
We provide services to injured workers through a WSIB Specialty Program. If your injury is work-related please contact your case manager to access our services. If your past care with SCIL was through the WSIB, please contact your case manager to confirm your claim status before booking an appointment. This will help us make sure the right funding options are put in place for you. - Ontario disability support program(ODSP)
If you are currently receiving social assistance, the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) offers additional funding support. - Private insurance
Private insurance or extended health benefits sometimes offer reimbursement for our services. Every provider and every insurance plan is different. For example, some providers offer partial reimbursement for the cost of custom foot orthotics.
We recommend you contact your insurance provider before your appointment to find out if you are eligible for a reimbursement. It is important to also ask what your insurance company needs for a successful claim.
Your insurance provider might require a physician referral or prescription that you did not need to access our services in order to process your insurance claim. If this is the case, have your physician submit a referral to SCIL on your behalf.
Additional funding
There are a number of other funding programs that help cover the cost of prosthetic or orthotic devices or custom made footwear.
These include
- Federal programs that support new Canadians, veterans, and First Nations
- National charitable organizations like War Amps
- Municipal programs
Our funding advisor will work with you to find the best funding options for you.
Out-of-province coverage
If you are from a province other than Ontario, you will need to contact your provincial provider to ensure your care with SCIL is covered.
