Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

Each of our services is different. Details can be found on their pages. Here is a quick reference guide:

Prosthetics: You need a referral from a doctor to see a prosthetist for a new device. If we made your current device, you can book a repair appointment with us directly.

Orthotics: You need a referral from a doctor to see orthotist about a new device.

Pedorthics: You do not need a referral from a doctor to book an appointment for our pedorthic services. However, your insurance provider may require a prescription from a doctor for reimbursement. Check with your insurance provider for details before booking an appointment.

Podiatry: You do not need a referral to book a podiatry appointment.

How do I know if you’ve received my referral?

We review all of our referrals, and patients contacted within two business days of receipt. If you haven’t heard from us, we may not have received your referral. Sometimes your doctor needs more time filling out our form. Confirm that your doctor has sent us your referral, then give us a call.

Is there a charge for the appointment?

We do not charge appointment fees for prosthetic, orthotic, or pedorthic appointments. There is a charge for any devices made for you by those departments.

There is a charge for podiatry appointments. More details.

How do I find you at the hospital?

When arriving at the Bayview (main) campus of Sunnybrook, please follow Life Saving Drive. Continue past the Emergency Department and you will see U-Wing on the left.

If you are already on campus, follow the overhead wayfinding signs to U-Wing. Make sure you are on the ground floor. The campus is big; if you have mobility issues, you may want to rent a Staxi. Once you arrive at U-Wing, follow the signs to the right toward the reception area.

Prosthetics FAQs

What is the cost of a prosthesis?

Every device is custom made. Your prosthetist will decide on the best design for your device, and then create a quote for you. The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care’s Assistive Devices Program regulates the cost of all components. This means the cost of your device will be roughly the same to matter where you seek care across the province. Our funding advisor can help you apply for potential additional funding.

What services do you offer amputees?

All new patients to SCIL — whether or not they are a new amputee — are seen in our clinic where they are assessed and paired with a prosthetist. Patients work with their prosthetist and technician for the design and fabrication of a new device, or to make repairs to their existing device.
