About resident care

Veteran and child

Sunnybrook staff are committed to being leaders in resident-centred quality care. Residents are viewed as a human being with unique health care needs. Their perspective, values, and wishes are continuously incorporated into the care and services provided. One of the key benefits for residents at Sunnybrook includes access to an interprofessional team of health care experts including the following:

  • physicians
  • nurses
  • psychologists
  • dietitians
  • physiotherapists
  • occupational therapists
  • pharmacists
  • chaplains
  • audiologists
  • speech-language pathologists
  • social workers
  • and recreation, music, art, and horticultural therapists.

Resident care is divided into four levels of care:

  • Physical support provides services to those who have chronic medical conditions and physical disabilities requiring care from an interprofessional team.
  • Cognitive support provides services to those with a primary diagnosis of dementia whose medical and/or behavioural needs can no longer be maintained in the community.
  • Mental health provides care for residents with chronic mental illness and other mental health needs such as substance abuse.
  • Palliative care directly meets the needs and supports veterans as well as community patients who require end-of-life care including pain and symptom control, emotional, social and spiritual support.

As an academic teaching centre fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, many students from various disciplines come to train with health professionals in the Veterans Centre for their geriatric rotation.
