Graduate Nursing Student Placement Requests

Application process guidelines

Sunnybrook offers a number of placement opportunities for graduate nursing students, where they can advance their knowledge and skills in a supportive teaching environment. Graduate nursing students can apply for placements through their academic institutions and include the following with their requests:

  • Current year of study and syllabus of the clinical course
  • Placement area(s) of interest
  • Start and end dates
  • Placement hours
  • Any additional relevant information

Acute care nurse practitioner (NP) student placements at Sunnybrook are available for those who have finished their first clinical placement and are ready to focus on in-depth learning with a subspecialty focus. Possible placement areas include: Oncology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Acute Pain Service, Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery, High Risk Obstetrics and HIV Clinic.

It is recommended that NP students have some clinical experience and/or knowledge of the patient population related to their placement request. Paediatric placements may be accommodated for experienced NICU nurses only.

Documentation requirements prior to student placement

A current Affiliation Agreement needs to be in place with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre prior to any student placement. The academic placement coordinator should contact Sunnybrook to ensure this is in place, or begin the process to establish an agreement.

Sunnybrook and the academic institution must both approve the placement request. All students with confirmed placements at Sunnybrook will receive an automated Welcome Letter email from nursing.students@sunnybrook.ca with log-in instructions for the student registration system called NirvSystem. NirvSystem includes orientation information, registration requirements and online training modules.

All emails are sent to the email address that your school inputs into HSPnet and/or provides directly to Sunnybrook. If you do not see emails from Sunnybrook in your inbox, please check your junk or spam folder for messages from nursing.students@sunnybrook.ca

If your placement is confirmed at Sunnybrook and you have not received a Welcome Letter email, please contact your school placement coordinator and:

  • Ensure your email address has been released to Sunnybrook via HSPNet
  • If your school does not use HSPnet, ensure your placement coordinator contacts students@sunnybrook.ca

Please note: During student on-boarding periods (August to early September; December to early January; April to early May) student inquiry volumes are high.

If you require assistance, please send your inquiry to nursing.students@sunnybrook.ca. Nursing Education is committed to returning your email as quickly as possible. Emails are preferred to phone calls.
