Congratulations Dr. Sandra Black!

Congratulations to Dr. Sandra Black, renowned cognitive and stroke neurologist, and scientific director of the Dr. Sandra Black Centre for Brain Resilience and Recovery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, who was recognized for her years of scientific achievements in and contributions to the field of Alzheimer’s and dementia, at the recent annual Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in San Diego, California.

Dr. Black was presented the Bill Theis Award for Distinguished Service to the International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART),which has evolved 29 self-organizing working groups, called Professional Interest Areas, including trainees, who meet annually and hold virtual webinars and planning meetings throughout the year. The award distinguishes “an ISTAART member who has provided continued and outstanding services to the ISTAART community.”

Dr. Black served as vice-chair and chair of the ISTAART Advisory Council between 2014 and 2018.

“I am very honoured to receive this award,” says Dr. Black, who attended the ceremony virtually. “It was my privilege to have had a leadership role in the early development of ISTAART.”

The Alzheimer’s Association news release notes that, “Dr. Black’s research spans 30+ years and more than 600 papers, and has had an invaluable impact on our understanding of the connection between dementia and vascular health.”
