Sunnybrook celebrates education leaders

May 28, 2014

Sunnybrook’s champions of education were honoured May 27, 2014, at the 4th Annual Celebrating Excellence in Education Awards evening.

The event lauded more than 101 education leaders for their passion for teaching at Sunnybrook and beyond. These staff and physicians have received awards for their teaching by Sunnybrook or our partner institutions and those who received academic appointments and promotions at the University of Toronto.

Five awards were presented by the Sunnybrook Education Advisory Council (SEAC) following a nominations process and panel review.

Those winners were:

  • Educating Sunnybrook: Ms. Mary Glavassevich, Patient Care Manager, D6 Surgical Oncology.
  • Educating Beyond Sunnybrook: Dr. Mark Rapoport, Psychiatrist and Associate Scientist
  • Teaching: Dr. Isabelle Aubert, Senior Scientist.
  • Patient and Family Education: Ms. Angela Leahey, Advanced Practice Nurse, Odette Cancer Centre.

Dr. Steven Shumak received the Allan Knight Lifetime Education Achievement Award, which honours an education champion who has made a significant contribution to education at Sunnybrook. Dr. Shumak, staff physician on the General Internal Medicine Team, has worked at Sunnybrook for 19 years.

“The Celebrating Excellence in Education event honours our education champions and the outstanding work they do each day to provide excellent learning experiences for our students, patients and their families,” said Dr. Ari Zaretsky, VP, Education. “We are so proud of our award winners, those who received appointments and promotions, and all of the staff and physicians who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to education. At Sunnybrook, we believe education is foundational for inventing the future of healthcare. Thank you to our award winners and others in our Sunnybrook community who contribute to this mission.”
