Q and A with an Education Champion: Cathy Lemieux
Cathy Lemieux is an Organizational Development and Leadership Associate at Sunnybrook. She received an Educating Sunnybrook Award from the Sunnybrook Education Advisory Council this year.
We caught up with Cathy to hear what she thinks about being an educator.
- How long have you worked at Sunnybrook?
It is hard for me to believe – I have been here 40 years. I was just baby when I started! I was prepared to be a nurse back then but not so much to be an educator!
- What do you like the most about your job?
As a member of the Organizational Development and Leadership (OD&L) department, I love the variety of work and experiences that are available to me. The best, though, is seeing the “ah ha” moment in someone’s face when something I am teaching connects with the learner.
- How does it feel to receive this award?
I am kind of embarrassed about it. There are so many talented educators in Sunnybrook that are just as deserving of this recognition. At the same time, I very much appreciate the recognition from all those who worked on and supported this nomination…my OD&L team mates and Sunnybrook colleagues. Thank you!
- What do you think it takes to be a good educator staff?
I think it is a never-ending journey to being a good educator. Like any craft, you stay good at it through your own learning of new practices, and daring to transfer that learning into doing things differently. I have learned, and am still learning, from all those talented educators I mentioned above and especially from my colleagues in OD&L.
- What advice do you have for other educators, preceptors or mentors at Sunnybrook?
Always be open to learning new ways of being a better teacher. And I guess this proves the saying “We are all teachers and learners”.
