Sunnybrook leading new suicide prevention study during COVID-19 pandemic

August 21, 2020

Dr. Mark Sinyor speaks to CTV News Toronto about a new suicide prevention study being led by Sunnybrook during the pandemic, which will enable researchers to identify factors that may influence suicide rates during the initial stages of the pandemic.

The study will continue through one year of the pandemic so that longer term trends and data can shape ongoing public policy related to COVID-19 and future public heath emergencies.

Dr. Sinyor tells CTV News that various factors can impact suicide rates including mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety or substance use problems, or life stressors such as job loss or divorce.

“The key message is, there is hope and if you’re struggling, reach out,” says Dr. Sinyor.
