Pharmacy Technician - Information Services - Regular Full-time (213691)

We currently have a Regular Full-time opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician in the Information Services department at our Bayview Campus.

Hours of Work: Weekdays: Days, 8hrs; As per schedule

Summary of Duties:

This position is a Pharmacy Technician with the SunnyCare team in Information Services, a diverse team creating software solutions for a large, complex hospital environment on a variety of platforms. The SunnyCare team is fast paced, exciting and above all, fun! The primary responsibility of the Pharmacy Technician includes the medications analysis, configuration, build and maintenance of the SunnyCare application:

  • Identify any service specific medication ordering workflows to ensure CPOE can accommodate
  • Work with the inter-professional team to identify and build any additional medication orders unique to their service
  • Define common medication orders for quick picks specific to their service.
  • Medications related enhancement for SunnyCare modules such as: Medication Catalog, Prescription Writer, Clinical Decision Support, Home Medications & Allergies, Medication Reconciliation, Order Sets, Orders and medication related features and functions

This position requires contact with clinicians, managers, project teams, developers, system administrators, technical services and other IS staff. Working with the Lead SunnyCare Pharmacist and reporting to the Information Services Project Director for SunnyCare, the successful applicant will be required to perform the following functions:

During the Computerized Provider Order Entry project, the Pharmacy Technician will:


  • Review current state for medication ordering
  • Chart review and analysis of medication orders by clinical service/team
  • Review last 12 months of medication orders entered into Sunnybrook’s Pharmacy system WORx
  • Review medication orders on order sets
  • Identify ordering practice highlights
  • Identify gaps in SunnyCare/WORx medication catalogue and coordinate with pharmacy to resolve.


  • Review existing SunnyCare medication ordering templates for gaps
  • Create new order templates or update existing order templates and finalize design with clinical teams to ensure safe ordering practices.
  • Define service specific medication order favourites/groups


  • Complete individual order templates for CPOE with HL7 mapping and test
  • Refactor order sets and HL7 mapping and test
  • Build service favourites/groups orders
  • Assist testing SunnyCare Clinical Decision Support/RxVigilance as required
  • Complete mandatory change requests
  • Tracking and resolution of design and testing issues to complete successful test and approval of build
  • Provide support for user testing
  • Maintain related project and application design, testing and training documentation


  • Monitor application activity and performance after implementation
  • Provide training and user support pre and post implementation
  • Provide post-implementation enhancements or resolutions
  • Provide knowledge transfer for ongoing support

Operations and support include:

  • Ongoing analysis, design and develop enhancement requests/bug fixes:
  • Implement CDS for Prescription Writer/eDischarge MedRec
  • Implement CDS sand box MHMM enhancements like pharmacy initiative to reduce unnecessary medication ordering during admission MedRec
  • MedRec enhancements as required
  • Prescription Writer enhancements as required
  • New order set mapping/updates to existing order sets
  • Sunnybrook Drug Repository enhancements (location specific catalogue, autosub/restricted drug, etc)
  • SunnyCare/SDR catalogue ongoing maintenance


  • Current licensure by the Ontario College of Pharmacists and a graduate of CCAPP Accredited Pharmacy Technician Education program leading to licensure as a Regulated Pharmacy Technician or nearing completion of the process and exams to become a licensed and Regulated Pharmacy Technician.
  • 3-5 years of related experience, preferably in implementation and/or support of clinical information systems in a hospital setting is an asset
  • Knowledge or experience with WORx or other Pharmacy systems, Hospital CPOE systems and HL7 is an asset
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, and exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple tasks projects with tight timeframes, strict budgets and diverse stakeholder groups
  • Superior problem identification, analysis and resolution skills
