Speech Language Pathologist - Interprofessional Practice and Holland (7 East) - Regular Full Time (222031)

We currently have a Regular Full Time opportunity for a Speech Language Pathologist on the Interprofessional Practice and Holland (7 East) department at Bayview Campus and Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre Campus.

Hours of Work:

Weekdays; 8 hrs; As per schedule

Summary of Duties

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has an opportunity for a Speech-Language Pathologist to provide comprehensive swallowing and communication services for patients at the Bayview Campus (Priority Coverage throughout Acute care) and Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre (Transitional Care). The Speech Language Pathologist must be adaptive to work in any acute care and transitional care unit and thrives on the opportunity to work in different practice areas. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with patients, families and interprofessional team members to provide evidence-informed best practice.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assess, swallowing and communication; plan, implement and monitor swallowing and communication impairment interventions
  • Provide education and counselling for patients experiencing communication and/or swallowing difficulties
  • Provide education and counselling to caregivers regarding safe swallowing and communication strategies
  • Manage complex discharges within the transitional care program, including education for patients and families
  • Maintain patient records and workload measurement in accordance with facility and professional standards
  • Act as an SLP resource to the SLP team, the interprofessional team, families and students
  • Maintain and upgrade skills and knowledge through continuing education and seek opportunities for knowledge dissemination
  • Participate in SLP clinical education and interprofessional education activities
  • Participate in SLP Professional Council, Program and hospital-wide meetings, committees and planning as required
  • Practice in accordance with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario

Qualifications/Skills

  • Current CASLPO registration
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a hospital setting, preferred
  • Previous experience working with medically complex patients in both acute care and transitional care
  • Experience with dysphagia and communication assessment and management
  • Experience providing patient/family education is essential
  • Experience with video fluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing required
  • Demonstrated commitment to student education
  • Demonstrated commitment to Person-Centred care
  • Application of evidence-based practice.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Excellent communication and time-management skills
  • Initiative, teamwork and ability to effectively prioritize work.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of intra- and inter-professional teams managing multiple demands and changing priorities, while being flexible and adaptable.
