Occupational Therapist - Acute Care Priority Coverage-OT - Temporary full-time  (222351)

We currently have a Temporary full-time (until approx. Jan 2024) opportunity for an Occupational Therapist in the Acute care Priority Coverage-OT at our Bayview campus.

Hours of Work:

Weekday: Days, 8hrs; As per schedule,

Weekend: Weekend Team rotations

Sunnybrook has an exciting temporary full-time opportunity for an experienced occupational therapist to work as part of the Priority Coverage team. The Priority Coverage-OT (PC-OT) will see patients across clinical areas who are ready for discharge and transition, including from Integrated Community, Trauma, Neurosurgery, Oncology and Cardiology Programs. Patients referred to the PC-OT are identified by unit OTs when there are more patients ready for discharge and transition than the unit OT is able to see. This PC-OT role will be well-suited for an OT who enjoys variety in their work and a fast-paced environment, in order to address daily prioritization and re-prioritization of caseload and to efficiently and effectively provide discharge and transition plans. This full-time PC-OT would work with another PC-OT that holds a 0.5 FTE role.

Summary of Duties

  • Collaborate with patients and family to assess patient functioning to improve and optimize safety in occupational performance
  • As part of the interprofessional team, provide person-centred assessments and interventions, including recommendations for follow-up [i.e. home, rehabilitation, transitional care]
  • Actively participate in interprofessional team activities such as team meetings, clinical rounds, team huddles and quality improvement initiatives
  • Act as an occupational therapy expert resource for staff, students, and other healthcare providers
  • Maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills through continuing education and professional development
  • Seek opportunities for involvement in practice-based research and engage in knowledge translation through evidence-based practice and implementing best practices
  • Participate in profession-specific and interprofessional activities in support of the Sunnybrook’s full affiliation with the University of Toronto
  • Practice in accordance with regulatory body (COTO) standards for practice

Qualifications/Skills

  • Registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario required
  • Membership and insurance with one of CAOT or OSOT required
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience required, with inpatient experience preferred
  • Breath of experience with patient populations, including General Internal Medicine, surgical, multi-system/ neurological and orthopaedic trauma, oncology, cardiology and cardiovascular
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to work in team environments, across multiple interprofessional teams
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills to prioritize requests across 10 units
  • Ability to efficiently complete assessments of a patient’s occupational performance issues (ADLs and IADLS, cognition and perception, functional mobility, psychosocial and mental health, home safety, and need for equipment/aides to optimize independence) for the purpose of timely and effective discharge and transition planning
  • Strong cognitive assessment experience required, including screening for behavioural and/or emotional difficulties and providing patient education about recovery
  • Working knowledge of community-based programs and use referral systems such as RM&R
  • Hand therapy and splinting experience an asset
  • Computer literacy required

  • Ability to demonstrate reflective practice
