Mental Health Clinician (Aftercare Services) - Thompson Centre, Brain Sciences - Regular Full-time (211905)

We currently have a Regular Full Time opportunity for a Medical Health Clinician- Aftercare Services  in the Thompson Centre, Brain Sciences Department at our Bellwood Site.

The Frederick W. Thompson Anxiety Disorders Centre, within Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, is a specialized program treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related "spectrum" disorders, including hoarding, hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking and body dysmorphic disorder. We are currently seeking an allied health professional with experience and expertise in treatment of OCD to join the inter-professional team delivering intensive residential and outpatient treatment for severe OCD.

Summary of Duties:

The Thompson Anxiety Disorders Centre is committed to providing highly specialized, evidence based care to those experiencing OCD, with a special emphasis on severe and treatment refractory OCD. Included in that commitment is a desire to better understand what contributes to people’s ability to maintain their wellness post-treatment, longer term and to develop strategies to integrate those skills and supports into our services.

The person in this new role will apply their knowledge of OCD and CBT/ERP to lead the expansion, evaluation and development of interventions aimed at supporting our clients’ long term recovery. In collaboration with the peer support specialist, other staff and clients, this role will build on current aftercare services to design program activities that; support a successful transition out of treatment, assist people with adapting learned skills to the home and community environment, and support clients’ (re)engagement in the broader community.

Additionally, the creativity and expertise this person has in relation to Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) will be leveraged to continue to strengthen ERP activity within the intensive program. This will involve hands on mentoring, coaching and skills building.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and facilitate a program of Aftercare options such as ERP, life skills and other relevant groups to meet the recovery needs of clients.
  • Provide direct one on one support and coaching for clients transitioning from treatment, including working with treatment teams to clarify discharge plans and support clients in implementing them.
  • In collaboration with the peer support specialist, lead the delivery of community development activities among clients and alumni.
  • In collaboration with key staff, support new staff and trainees through coaching and training on ERP fundamentals, including experiential coaching (modelling, observing and offering feedback).
  • Support ERP focused skills building and case based discussions that will continue to improve quality of patient care and patient outcomes.
  • Participate in education activities, particularly those involving building ERP skills in community through; training partnerships, presentations, workshops, public forums and special events.
  • Support the integration of research and best practices into programming through innovative activities such as an ERP library.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and program development activities of the aftercare and recovery programming, as well as the program more broadly.


  • Masters Degree in occupational therapy, social work or related field required.
  • Must be a current member in good standing and be registered with appropriate college.
  • Minimum 5 years’ previous experience working in a mental health care setting required; experience within day hospital or residential treatment settings considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and related disorders; as well as anxiety disorders more broadly.
  • Proven counselling and problem solving skills essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CBT/ERP and its application in mood and anxiety.
  • Superior communication, negotiation, mediation and collaborative inter-professional team skills required.
  • Superior time management, organization, and prioritization skills in addressing multiple tasks and timelines in a fast-paced environment required.
  • Interest in taking the lead on developing activities that will help build the Aftercare program.
  • Understanding and commitment to the principles of health equity and anti-oppression.
