St. John's and Sunnybrook approve merger
St. John's Rehab Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre are pleased to announce they have agreed to merge voluntarily into a single, comprehensive health care provider.
St. John's Rehab and Sunnybrook will become a single health care organization dedicated to providing a system of care for patients from acute illness or injury, through to rehabilitation and recovery. The new organization will maintain the reputation of excellence in patient care, research and education that each hospital has developed over the years.
"Our organizations are coming together to improve patient care," said Barry McLellan, President and CEO of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. "The benefits of this merger will be realized in many ways such as increased efficiency in moving patients to and from acute and post-acute care as well as further opportunities in research and education."
"We see this as an opportunity to create an innovative ‘one-stop-shop' for complex acute care and rehabilitation," said Malcolm Moffat, President and CEO of St. John's Rehab Hospital. "This merger will help our patients receive the care they need, when and where they need it, while benefitting from increased research and innovation."
The two hospitals have collaborated in the past and the merger comes as a logical next step for both organizations. Each has complementary programs for patients who have complex health issues such as acute interventions and rehabilitation for people with cancer, cardiovascular disease, orthopaedic and arthritic conditions, neurological issues such as stroke, and traumatic injuries such as major burns. The hospitals share many similarities in our organizational cultures and both have a strong commitment to teaching and finding new and better ways of caring for patients.
Guided by the principles set out in a July 2011 Memorandum of Understanding, teams from both hospitals have come together to plan for a smooth transition. For periodic updates about the merger, visit stjohnsrehab.com and sunnybrook.ca.
