Veteran George Markow celebrates 100th birthday

Veteran George Markow celebrates 100th birthday by raising $100,000+ for COVID-19 research

George Markow made his ambitious fundraising effort look like a walk in the park. On April 14, the WWII Veteran celebrated two milestones: turning 100 years of age and surpassing his goal of walking 100 kilometers to raise $100,000 for COVID-19 research.

George spent his 100th birthday with his daughter and essential caregiver, Sylvia. According to Sylvia, it was a very exciting but busy day.

"We opened many of the birthday cards that he had received, ate lots of cupcakes and treats, had many wonderful video calls with family and friends, opened birthday presents and drank champagne together to toast his amazing life!"

Concerned about how future pandemics might affect his great-grandchildren, George's aim was to raise $100,000 for vital research before his 100th birthday. He committed to supporting both his local hospital and Sunnybrook, where he had life-saving brain surgery five years ago.

To date George has raised over $142,000 for Sunnybrook and walked 150 kilometres.

His effort has not gone unnoticed. Support and donations have come in from across the country along with requests for media interviews. George is surprised by all the fuss.

"All I did was walk and that is something I have always enjoyed doing! Mostly everyone walks. I really shouldn't be getting so much attention!"

During the pandemic George has not been able to visit in person with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but they have been cheering him on from the sidelines.

Four-year-old Nora has this to say about her great-grandfather. "Opa has raised so much money to help get rid of the germs! I miss him and love him so much! Opa is the best!"

George says that he would like to walk another 50 kilometres to reach 200 km, but cautions, "It may take longer to walk that distance than when I was 99."
