Family integrated care (FICare) is a model of care where parents, through individual support and education, are encouraged to take on primary role as caregivers for their premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This innovative model of care is being studied in this international randomized clinical trial to see whether it would result in better health and wellbeing of premature infants and improved parental satisfaction and stress level with the NICU experience. The trial has completed recruitment, and we are currently planning additional studies to evaluate the effect of FICare on parents and staff in the NICU, and the long term effect of FICare on premature infants.
