Treatment of Myofascial Back Pain

Recent studies have shown that the natural history favors recovery regardless of the type of treatment. This message is reinforced by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research in the US as well as by the Institute for Work and Health in Ontario. Minimal intervention in the first three to four weeks post injury with a focus on reassurance, usual activity and symptom relief is the most effective management approach. Treatment should be active not passive and aimed at reconditioning the supporting spinal musculature, weight loss, cessation of smoking and aerobic conditioning.
