Plantar Fasciitis
Treatment
There are many options available to help treat plantar fasciitis. The key to treating plantar fasciitis is reducing the strain and inflammation on the plantar fascia. This can be achieved through:
- Custom Foot Orthotics
Custom foot orthotics help to maintain a normal alignment of the bones and joints of the foot, which can help provide relief by reducing the strain on the plantar fascia. - Stable Footwear
Appropriate, well-fitting footwear can help to absorb shock and support the foot. Learn about your feet and know what styles of shoes are best suited for you. - Heel Pads
Heel pads/cups make from silicone gel or foam can help absorb shock and ease pressure on the plantar fascia. - Rest and Ice
Rest is a very important in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. It reduces continued injury to the tissue and allows it to heal. Initially, applying ice to your heel for 15-20 minutes, several times a day may aid in reducing the inflammation. Heat may be more useful for those with chronic inflammation. - Anti-Inflammatories and Cortisone
Your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory pills to help reduce the inflammation in the foot. A cortisone injection may be considered for those who do not respond to conservative treatments. - Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy may help decrease the inflammation, and strengthen the small muscles of the foot to assist in supporting the weakened plantar fascia.
