Prosthesis Care

Below Knee Bandaging

Position

The patient may sit or lie supine. It is most important the the knee remain in full extension throughout the procedure.

Procedure

  1. Begin with a diagonal turn starting at the outside aspect of the knee, run the bandage down the back of the stump. (Fig. 1)
  2. The bandage should cover at least half the end of the stump. (Fig. 2)
  3. Bring the bandage up, around and then down over the remaining exposed stump end. (Fig. 3)
  4. Continue bandaging, working up the stump with figure-eight turns to above the knee. Reduce the tension on the bandage as you move up the stump. Overlap half the bandage width on each turn. (Fig. 4)
  5. Anchor the end of the bandage with tape or a safety pin.
